Backyard Fire Pit Regulations
Ahhh, summer. Is there anything better than sitting next to a nice roaring fire in your backyard fire pit with your friends as the sun starts to set?
Recently in Saskatoon a night like we just described turned to disaster...a home's garage burned to the ground. The fire was deemed accidental by a fire pit that had holes in the bottom that allowed hot embers to fall onto a wooden deck which in turn caught fire and spread to the garage. Damage was estimated at $40,000 with no word on whether the homeowner had insurance.
In Winkler, according to the Recreational Fire Pit Guidelines, a fire pit must be at least 10 feet (or 3.4 meters) away from buildings, property lines and any combustible materials. There also needs to be a minimum 18 inch non-combustible base area extending beyond the edge of the fire pit.
